The Preservation label presents Head In The Trees, Heart On the Ground, the second album
from Sydney’s The Singing Skies. Led by songwriter and guitarist Kell Derrig-Hall, Head In
The Trees, Heart On The Ground delivers on the promise of The Singing Skies’ debut
Routine and War, affecting a zone between Nico and John Cale’s stark , confessional style
and the warm, plaintive way of Gene Clark and ‘70s period Dylan.
On Head In The Trees, Heart On The Ground, Derrig-Hall proves a gentle and knowing soul
with an open-hearted lyricism where tenderness and wonder define his disarming nature.
The music is similarly in tow to an earthiness in its rootsy melodic way, with the searching
quality of classic country rock and ornate vintage pop folding through these intricate yet
immediate and beautiful songs.
The outline for all these songs is marked by the sudden passing of Derrig-Hall’s musician
father in 2015, further ghosted by Derrig-Hall’s use of his father’s guitars through recording.
While not a direct tribute, Head In The Trees, Heart On The Ground is a poignant casting of
deeper feelings and meanings that underpin our everyday and relationships.
Derrig-Hall has solidified the line-up of The Singing Skies since Routine and War (which
featured Melbourne’s Laura Jean and Jen Cloher band drummer Jen Sholakis) with a band
featuring guitarists Jon Hunter (The Holy Soul) and Ben Morgan (Ernest Ellis, Cameras), as
well as Lia Tsamoglou (aka Melodie Nelson), cellist Robin Dixon and drummer Ben James.
Along with Hunter, Morgan and Derrig-Hall’s guitar tapestries and Dixon’s haunting cello,
Tsamoglou’s spectral harmonies are another highlight on Head In The Trees, Heart On The
Ground. Joining in with his distinctive baritone on the song 'The Thunder Brings The Rain' is
Jack Ladder.
Derrig-Hall recorded Head In The Trees, Heart On The Ground in the rural surrounds of
Bundanon on the NSW South Coast, returning to Sydney for additional production with Tim
Kevin, who’s recently worked with Holly Throsby and Youth Group.
There’s a rare air about Head In The Trees, Heart On The Ground, conjured by Derrig-Hall’s
sensitivity and candour. This a quietly rich work that’s set to endure.
