After flirting with both sonic goth garage rock and twists of psych rock on their earlier releases, the Oslo-based trio Outer Limit Lotus are expanding their repertoar on "Dazzling Darkness", taking a leap into cinematic freedom rock. As a chilling response to American 60's west coast rock, mixed with filmatic inspiration from the likes of Angelo Badalamenti or Henry Mancini and the wide open soundscapes mostly just found on 80's royalties like Tears For Fear, The Cure or a-ha. This is the sound of Nordic Noir personified. This is summer and fall combined, solar eclipses on the beach, mysterious and alluring. This is layers on layers of impressive rock. "If there is an overall theme for the Dazzling Darkness album, it has to be the ambiguity of the dark and the unknown. Is it just a void that swallows you whole, or is it a pitch black ocean of endless possibilities? We borrowed the title from Joni Mitchell's song Shine, where she is singing: 'Shine on the dazzling darkness / that restores us in deep sleep / Shine on what we throw away / and what we keep' The title in itself contains this ambiguity, that the darkness can be dazzling is maybe a contradiction, but also a message of hope and understanding. The lyrics are inspired by gothic lore and haunted house movies, but also takes inspiration from dream interpretation, meditation practice and mountain hiking." -Outer Limit Lotus The musical inspiration for the record is as diverse as the dazzling darkness, and while some songs takes inspiration from the mood of norwegian black metal bands such as Emperor and Darkthrone, a lot of the melodies and beats are inspired by the cool, open sound of bands and artists like Talk Talk, The Cure and Angelo Badalamenti. While the trio were mixing the song 'Let The Night Ride You Home' Ulver was recording in the studio next door, Kristoffer Rygg (Ulver) popped in and immediately described it as 'Dark Roxy Music' - a huge compliment. On the slower, more ballad-like songs of the album, the band are trying to summon the dark crooning atmosphere of Leonard Cohen and Scott Walker, everything mixed in a gothic post-punk blender.
