Clever people have to give themselves homework so that they don't get bored, and LE REX are no exception. They have made three EPs, under different auspices, once written and colourfully reworked, once played live in a room and inspired by it, once driven by groove, dispensing with themes and melodies. But that's just the framework, the superstructure, what you hear in the end is music. And depending on which door you open, which EP you play, you hear other facets of the Swiss jack-of-all-trades and see other places: Abdullah Ibrahim's sunsets over Cape Town, the crossroads orchestrated by Henry Mancini from Orson Welles' 'a touch of evil', J Dilla's Detroit, Kurt Weill's Berlin. depending on where you are, you hear fever or awakening, hope or destruction. This is how music should be, not a ‘make a wish’, not a 3-course menu, but a box from which something new and something different jumps out at you every day.
