As a group, the Hokum Boys, later known as The Famous Hokum Boys, never featured a consistent lineup of musicians and performers except for the enigmatic blues musician Bob Robinson. (Who at various points sang, played guitar, clarinet, and banjo.) Alongside Robinson, numerous pre-war bluesmen such as Jimmy Blythe, Washboard Sam, Casey Bill Weldon and various others had been connected to the group. As their name suggested, they were consummate practitioners of hokum blues, a style of blues music which was deliberately comical, and rife with double-entendres and ribald lyrics.??The Hokum Boys were prominent from 1929 to 1937, and operated primarily throughout the Chicago area, often collaborating with peers such as Big Bill Broonzy, Leroy Carr, and Scrapper Blackwell. Their connections to each other could be tenuous at times, with multiple configurations calling themselves The Hokum Boys operating at different, or even the same time. Despite this, the group cut numerous records for Paramount and other in-demand blues labels before fizzling out, leaving behind a wealth of singles behind that are both draped in mystery as well as explicit language.??A1.
