Deuce emerged in Covid's 2020 lockdown when Kayleigh Heydon and Curtis Wakeling
extended their romantic bond into a creative one, releasing their home-recorded, mixed,
and produced self-titled debut album via Dinosaur City Records in 2021 before the duo had
ever played together outside of their home.
For Wild Type, the duo build on their debut album's foundation, going bigger and broader
with a newfound confidence and profundity; swapping out their bedroom studio in
Thornbury for a recording space in Coburg and trading drum machines for a live sound.
Straddling the line between intimate and personal dream pop and upbeat indie rock, Wild
Type collages themes of vulnerability, tenderness, love, and loss, with Heydon and Wakeling
swapping instruments and vocals across the album's ten tracks.
Highlighted alongside the new record is album opener 'Fall Apart', which opens with an
appregiated, synthesised choir, before Heydon's vocals take the lead. The song reflects on
friendships, community, and the importance of nurturing relationships above all else.
Sparsely arranged slide guitar gives Heydon's gorgeous and rich vocals space to swirl
around.
Since the release of their debut album in 2021, at the peak of covid lockdowns, Deuce have
been met with acclaim from NME, Guardian Australia, Paper Magazine, The Music, Music
Feeds, Purple Sneakers, Pilerats, and The Big Issue and numerous others. Their debut record
was nominated for the prestigious Australian Music Prize, with a handful of rotations adds
across radio including FBi Radio, 2SER and Edge, plus plays on double j and triple j. The
group have also caught the attention of tastemaking playlist editors, with adds to influential
playlists including Spotify's Soft Glow, Fresh Finds: Indie, Fresh Finds AU & NZ, The Local
List, and Fuzzy, plus Apple Music's New Music Daily, Indie + Chill, Wistful Winter and Always
Sunday.
Live, Deuce extend to a five-piece band, with Jake O'Brien (NOCON) on drums, Angie Brown
on bass, and Claudia Colvin on synth. Solid fixtures on the local music circuit, the group have
shared stages with some of the country's most exciting artists including Julia Jacklin, Cool
Sounds, and FLOWERTRUCK.
