Creating music since the late 1990s, Simona Castricum's music explores queer and trans
intersections in architecture, music, the public realm, and civic life. One of
Naarm/Melbourne's most exciting and prolific electronic artists, Simona Castricum was
nominated for Best Electronic Act and Best Solo Artist at The Music Victoria Awards
following the release of Panic/Desire (2020), which debuted at #1 on the AIR 100%
Independent Album Chart and was met with support from NME Magazine and i-D among
others. Saturn Rules the Material World (2020), the debut album from SaD, Castricum's
minimal-wave/pop project in collaboration with the late Daphne Camf, was featured as
Triple R's Album of the Week, and saw the duo score a nomination for Best Electronic Act at
The Music Victoria Awards in 2021.
A deep and spiritual dive into themes of isolation, loss and grief, the collection of songs that
make up up Castirum's fourth full-length album SINK were written for a season of sell-out
live performances in collaboration with Carla Zimbler. Castricum and Zimbler found a
musical and visual relationship through installation design and event architectural practice,
taking the show to Arts House in 2021/22 throughout Naarm/Melbourne's COVID-19
lockdowns, with two further seasons at VIVID Sydney and Midsumma Festival.
An artistic step forward for Castricum, who teamed up with producer Nao Anzai (Mildlife,
Deaf Wish, No Zu) to explore hybrid acoustic and electronic percussive textures, Simona
shares, 'SINK is a journey through the gamut of emotions Naarm's COVID-19 lockdowns
threw at me. Writing during this time presented a space to take stock, to check in with my
feelings and surrender to the circumstances I have no control over. The influence of Daphne
Camf's passing and the end of SaD in 2021 is everpresent in the atmosphere of SINK. In every
way, SINK is a tribute to all that Daphne inspired within me as a person and an artist.'
